I was happy to do a bit of sketching today and participate with the Illustration Friday theme of layer. For some reason, whenever I draw underground scenes, I automatically include a burrow with hibernating animals. I wonder if it’s because I would like to hibernate myself? Or perhaps the state of sleep just seems so happy calm and tranquil.

Otherwise, a few snapshots around my desk area reveal a chaotic mess of many partial projects, thoughts and ideas in progress really. Sometimes I let myself start something to go with the flow of the moment…but then after a while I might not even remember what all the excitement was about. Yes, I have nail polish lying around, magazines and that is a toilet roll as I’ve had a horrible cold these days.

I’ve been wanting to practice watercoloring more, but I haven’t been able to clear space away to leave it out all the time. I think if I created a watercolor station somewhere, I would practice more. I’ve realized that I just need to play more…otherwise I’ll never learn to control the medium. I think what I like the most about watercolor are the fluid, organic surprises when you are able to manipulate the flowing water and colors melting together. At least, that is what excites me the most…

Although it’s fun and freeing to go into creative play here and there…sometimes I want to finish some-thing just to feel accomplished! That feeling of completion can be sooo satisfying. The woven heart thingies you see below were just experiments in learning how to do it (picked up from this blog) and I had a great idea about applying them…somehow…but not so sure anymore. Ho hum…such is the creative process. I suppose it’s better if I get back to client work instead of mulling around…

Check out kootoyoo for more creative spaces this week and CED participants here. It can be inspiring to see what others are doing…and I always hope it pushes me forward to completing my own work too…thanks for visiting. Ciao ciao…

I’m a leftie, so when I see a desk with a pencil positioned where yours is, I feel like it’s in the wrong spot!
Very cute sketch, I’ve had lots of animal illustration ideas on the mind lately myself.
I’ve found for instant gratification watercolor (because I have space to leave mine out but small children who will destroy them!), I can get by with watercolor pencils and a water brush, just to get some practice time in without the cleanup.
Oh how funny – I had never thought about that…haha…my brother is a leftie and I’ve always noted how interesting the variations of how we do things are… Thanks for your comments and I really do need to create a watercolor station myself. It would be sooo nice to be able to leave it out and work when time allows. I’m thinking of getting a waterbrush as well…maybe that would be even easier to keep out…
Ohh- I love this! Thanks for the peek into your workspace! All I have been doing lately is making jewelry. I seem to only be able to focus on one project for a month or two, and then switch.
Thanks, Chel! I agree that it’s good to focus – when you can! Haha…it’s my word of the year, but I still find it hard to follow by!
