A while back I had the honor of being interviewed by Sister Diane over at CraftyPod. We talked about drawing fearlessly and how much it means to me to simply “doodle.” Go ahead and check out the free podcast and let me know what you think -> (free for a few more days only!)

In the midst of vacation and the scorching summer heat here in Italy, I had forgotten to post about the podcast earlier. But it’s not too late to listen in. I hope that sharing my thoughts will help to spur others into the hobby of drawing. I really do feel that it’s one of those skills we should all learn to a certain extent, like reading and speaking and dance! We all did those things as kids with no second thoughts. And how wonderful was that freedom in our childhood years? It’s all apart of enabling yourself to express your feelings and thoughts in different ways. Through words, through images, through movement…
How do you feel about drawing and does it help your creative process even though your art might not be in illustration or visual media? Any comments or thoughts you would like to share?

This was *very* helpful to me. Drawing is sort of the thorn in my creative side. That whole “I’m just not good at it” makes me not only not want to do it, but hate it while I am doing it. I love the idea of just drawing multiples of things- lines, circles (hah! I guess I do this!), birds, etc until something emerges. That’s so great!
Thanks for checking out the podcast, Chel! I’m glad it was helpful!
Listened and liked it a lot – will you do more podcasts?
I never had those second thoughts most of the adolescents have – when I was growing up and started to realize that my abilities to create are less accurate that I want them to be and that the whole artsy thing may just not work for me. I was an incredibly shy kid and art was my whole world so I never thought of leaving it. However, when the time came, I had problems with showing everything I’ve done to others. Well, I think that there just have to be a problem on a way, sooner or later
I also like sketching on a cheaper paper. I just cannot draw anything on an expensive or brand new sheets of paper just like that – the best for me are some old print outs, covered with something on one side and treated as trash for most of the people. When I draw on them I don’t have this nagging feeling that if my sketch won’t be good enough I’m just gonna waste a super-duper paper. I just sit down and draw. One sketch, two sketches, doodle something, write down ideas, not really care if I use up all the space and if it’s fine looking – only thing that matters is if I know what’s there and where those sketches lead me. And then I can start drawing on a heavy and textured paper (which I love beyond wits).
Thank you for sharing the podcast
Thanks for listening @Adelaida and I’ve thought about podcasting myself, but not exactly sure I’ll have interesting topics to discuss all the time!
I can totally relate to your comments… we all have doubts and troubles along the way, but it’s important to break through them. Your artwork is beautiful!
Thank you for doing this podcast, you have inspired me to try drawing again – just no-pressure little doodles
And you asked in your newsletter about digitising your zine – I would be interested in that, especially the drawing edition!
So happy to have inspired you to draw – how wonderful! That totally makes my day… and thanks for responding about Pensieri, my zine. I will definitely be doing it from the response
