Essential Oil: Safety First Dilution Guide

After learning about the benefits of essential oils and actually experiencing first-hand the positive effects, I’ve definitely been researching and learning as much as possible about this natural wonder.

However, as I was bursting with enthusiasm, I found myself all too tempted to use too much, practically wanting to douse myself with my essential oils! I mean, they smell good and have therapeutic benefits? Gimme gimme!

But as with all things in life, everything in moderation, right? Even something as simple and basic as water can be toxic if you take in too much. Take it from Scientific American – yes, you can get water intoxication and die!

So it’s no surprise that with something as powerful as essential oils, learning how to properly use them is supremely important to avoid misuse and adverse effects. Especially when it comes to handling and applying to your skin directly, dilution is paramount.

Diluting your essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut or almond helps you AVOID:

  • skin irritations
  • long-term sensitivities
(like getting allergic to something you use too strongly over time)
  • any kind of systemic toxicity
(something inside of you and can’t see immediately react on your skin)

Ultimately, dilution saves you money because you are using less essential oil, yet you actually help your skin absorb the oils better as it spreads over the surface of your skin. It’s a win-win!

Everyone who is into essential oils knows that they are powerful, so it makes sense to me that they should be diluted! There are times when you might need a stronger recipe, but it’s not an everyday occurrence in my opinion. When treating specific ailments, you would obviously do your research and seek help to figure out a dilution that make sense.

So I decided to create a printable safety first dilution guide showing exactly how I dilute for my own family, including my very young kids.

I always say it’s best to err on the side of less. You can always increase the strength over time if you feel the need. With something as precious as essential oils, it makes sense to respect them and not waste.

I hope that by sharing this printable, it will help remind you to practice safety first and to always ask whenever in doubt. I believe in the amazing qualities of essential oils, but I also know with great power, it can be abused and misused (oh, don’t we know that right?) So education is required and having more conversations will make it more widespread knowledge for the future.

I would also like to add a disclaimer that different essential oils might have specific precautions and indications – like phototoxic citrus oils and hot oils that might irritate the skin even with low dilutions. And of course everyone is unique and there might some oils that irritate you and not another person.

So be sure to do your research, perform a small patch test with any new product, before diving in completely. There’s no reason why you can’t ask your doctor, family and friends about something before using – it’s only common sense to perform your due diligence.

Finally, I think every company that sells essential oils claim to have the best quality ever, the most testing ever, the purest and top therapeutic grade oils. You’ve heard it around, right?

I get it, companies need to do business and they are trying to convince you after all. When shopping for essential oils, just know that there is no standard or federal regulation, so it’s up to you to do your due diligence. I believe there’s more than one company that sells quality oil, so at that point it’s up to other factors that would influence your personal choice. We all have to take in the big picture and make our decisions.

I use doTERRA and if you want to learn more, get a free sample or chit chat – learn more about my doTERRA essential oil experience here. I would be happy to connect with you and give you my honest opinion.

I’m still a beginner in the world of essential oils, but seeing the results and feeling the empowerment of choosing a natural, safe and effective alternative for my family keeps me happy and always wanting to learn more! How about you?
