]]> I woke up this morning to this news…

You can print out a copy of the speech from the White House blog. I also saw this tweet about how Hitler was also confirmed dead on May 1st. Coincidence?

Although I am now living abroad in Italy…I am still an American. The news gave me a sense of relief. That someone who inspired so much destruction – was finally gone from this world. I was then thinking about how much time has passed with 9/11. Numbers that mean so much, across all cultures and languages…people know what you are talking about when you say 9/11. It’s been nearly 10 years since that day…and I still remember it clearly. I was at Cornell…a regular morning, walking around in the Ag quad. Then I saw the news being reported at the dining hall TV while passing by. I went into the EdWeb labs to check the Internet and I remember that the news sites were down, flooded with traffic. Then there was just a video of a plane crashing into the tower…so we could all see. It was shocking…and I was speechless.

Although I don’t know anyone close to me that was affected by the events of 9/11 directly…or anyone involved in the military these past 10 years…I still find this news of bin Laden’s death relieving. I can only imagine what it means to those directly affected in some way. Is it bizarre to rejoice at the death of someone? Is it right to seek revenge, when in normal everyday life that is always thought to be fruitless? Will this event solve our problems? Will terrorism stop? So many thoughts and questions are swirling in my mind. I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen now. If things will get worse or if things will get better because of this event. But I do agree with what many have said…plastered all over the news now… that it is a relief…a sense of closure for what happened to Americans…and to the world. That all efforts have resulted in something. And…I think the world is a better place…even in some small way…

We would like to believe that we have control over our lives, more so than ever before. But in times like these, we are violently reminded that Nature is above us all. We are at the mercy of things beyond our control…always. I don’t even know anyone personally who was directly affected, imagine those in the actual situation. It is so sad and so scary… but what words can really express the feelings…

I send my prayers, positive thoughts and hope to all those in need. Be brave.

One World One Heart from Torta Gialla is from tortagialla.com - the virtual creative journal of Artist Linda Tieu

]]> Ciao ciao from Italy! I found out about a great blog hopping event called One World One Heart and it’s actually the 5th and last year, so I had to participate myself. Moving from Los Angeles, California to Tuscany, Italy really opened my eyes to new worlds and experiences…but has also made me realize how wonderful it is to be able to connect to anyone in the world over the Internet. I’m so thankful to be able to blog and share my experiences with others. Although I love my new home and Italian culture, it’s nice to be able to read, speak and listen to English from the USA as well. I’m all for technology, but of course it’s the people behind the computers that are really doing wonderful things. We are all using technology to communicate and support each other, which is just uber cool. That’s why I love the spirit of this event, One World One Heart… it’s for active bloggers to meet with each other, discover each other and connect. Officially, this all starts midnight Jan 30th and ends on Feb 17th.

You can see the list of all participants here and thanks for stopping by my blog whether it’s the first time or if you are a regular reader. I am so thankful and grateful as always.

Everyone participating in this event provides a door prize…so I’m giving away a simple leather journal I made for sketching or writing. Measuring 6×8.5 inches, this journal is sewn together by hand using blue embroidery floss. It’s one of my prototypes from a while back, super simple black leather with blank white Fabriano 90 g/m2 paper inside. The closure is a vintage button with an anchor etching (marine theme) that you slip through the front flap to secure. A random commenter will be chosen on Feb 17th to receive the journal, so comment away and good luck! Anyone in the world can participate – I’ll send it anywhere :)

]]> Hi everyone! I just wanted to make a quick post about an opportunity to help out with the animal victims of the horizon gulf oil spill. If you would like to help out with a $10 donation to The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies or The International Bird Rescue Research Center, you can get a piece of art donated by an artist as well. I donated a watercolor turtle piece and also donated $10 myself to the The International Bird Rescue Research Center. ]]> Christmas cheer and holiday festivities fill this time of year and I know I’m not the only one who loves the sights, sounds and cozy family gatherings.  In the art world, there are usually a lot of holiday shows popping up as well, which is a great way to see fabulous work and do some holiday shopping while you’re at it.

Monkeyhouse Toys and Art Gallery is having three shows this month and it’s a place dear to my heart, where I did my first group shows with fellow friends.  It’s a bittersweet time this year because due to various reasons, Monkeyhouse will be closing it’s brick-n-mortar shop in Silverlake, California.  Sigh.  It’s probably not the first time you heard of a crafty artsy shop closing this year.  I hope you will consider dropping by the store and visiting the shows this last month if you are in the Los Angeles area…or visit Monkeyhouse Toys online to help support indie businesses and artists.  There will also be artisans and crafters selling their wares in front of the shop on Saturday starting at 1pm – so drop on by!

Below are the flyers for the three shows opening this month and to add some shameless self-promotion, I am participating in the “No more monkeys jumping on the bed” show and that’s my plushie monkey on the flyer below.  See how sad he is regarding Monkeyhouse?  He needs a good home!  I am honored to be able to grace the flyer for the show and very thankful and hopeful for the future.  I am happy to report that Monkeyhouse will be continuing online and probably curating pop up shows around town.  We all have to innovate when times change, right?
