How often have you spent money on something and then realized it was junk and totally not worth the price you paid? You feel ripped off!
Other times, you might have simply made a mistake in a purchase. It simply wasn’t worth it… for you. The value of something is different depending on your perspective and unique needs.
In regards to art, I read an article about how the pricing of famous artworks is thwarting our judgement. Honestly, if a Picasso doesn’t sell as much as a Monet, does the lower price mean inferior painter and higher price mean superior painter?
There are many of us who struggle with the pricing of our work and services. We try to go with the masses and hit somewhere within the “acceptable” range. But is that truly the right way to put a price tag on your work?
I still struggle when it comes to pricing. I’ve used the practical formulas and calculations to come up with that magical number. I’ve searched my soul and walked the fine line between feeling that the number is right or perhaps slightly high… because we often tend to devalue our work.
However, I haven’t figured it out yet. Every time I need to work on pricing, it’s a battle. It’s not easy. It brings up a lot of anxieties and doubts.
I realized the discomfort comes from associating the price tag with the worth or value… which is not always the case.
Maybe in the past, a high price meant superior craftsmanship… but not anymore. It seems like all smoke and mirrors when it comes to consumer products.
Probably the same thing when it comes to Art as well. Price doesn’t equate to your work’s worth or value. In a way, it’s easier to think about the two things separately. I might value something greatly, but the price is what works in today’s market… or for whatever circumstances.
